Rutter's opposes state labeling rule
Tuesday, November 13, 2007
Officials with York-based Rutter's Dairy plan a protest at the Capitol today over a state decision that requires Rutter's to change the labels on its milk.

Rutter's Dairy wants to continue using a "No Artificial Growth Hormones" label on milk it sells. It is a sister company of Rutter's Farm Stores, which operates convenience stores.

The state Department of Agriculture announced on Oct. 24 that Rutter's and 15 other dairy companies have until Jan. 1 to correct what the department said are false or misleading milk labels. The department said no scientific test exists to determine the truth of claims that a milk product doesn't contain any synthetic hormones.

Rutter's spokesman Neal Goulet said company officials will hand-deliver letters to members of the General Assembly to state their opposition.

Goulet said the protest is part of a broader Rutter's campaign to communicate its labeling position by running full-page newspaper ads, handing out more than 100,000 information cards at Rutter's stores and by posting information online at www.rutters.com.

Rutter's Farm Stores operates 51 stores throughout central Pennsylvania. Rutter's Holdings Inc. is the parent company of Rutter's Dairy and Rutter's Farm Stores.

More information about the Agriculture Department's position can be found at www.agriculture.state.pa.us under Food Labeling.

Rutter's contends that the state had approved the No Artificial Growth Hormones label in August before the department reversed its position in October.
